1st Week of Learning To Code

For the past 7 days, I have been working on getting better at coding. It has been a pretty long process just trying to find a way to learn that is structured or at least in a format where I know what I need to learn. I have been watching YouTube videos and learning how to use HTML mostly as of right now. The reason for that is because I have been reading some blogs, watching some YouTube videos, and reading some articles about where I should start my software engineering journey and about 95% of the information recommended learning to use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for front end development first. So that is where I started.

When I started this journey I didn’t even know where to start because there is just so much information out there when it comes to learning software engineering and it can become overwhelming pretty fast. At first I just Google searched for ways to learn coding that was free. It didn’t help me much but it did give me something to start on. From there I started to find YouTube videos that were snippets of full lessons from Programing with Mosh. By no means did he tell me to give him credit or anything of the sort. I don’t even know him and I doubt he knows I exist. I just think it is polite to give credit to others that have helped you. I have also started to subscribe more to other software engineers that are around the same age and talk about their experience within the tech field. Some of the information that is provided by some of these individuals are of no use to me. I saw videos about why you should not become a software engineer and all of these other things that are not relevant to what I am wanting to do with my coding so for those videos I just ignore them altogether. I just don’t think they will provide me with any useful information. I found another YouTube channel called Freecodecamp.com. Now, this is a channel that I can get behind because all of their content is free and they only accept donations to keep their content free. There is no paying for lessons or courses at all. All of their content is free on their YouTube channel and as well as on their website.

Today was the first day that I actually found a structure that I have been looking for on the freecodecamp.org website. I just started at the very beginning, even though I have learned a lot of other resources I wanted to start from the beginning so that I can reintroduce myself to what I already. I am happy to see that some of the things that I am learning I already know. I like it though because it means that I am learning something and not just wasting my time doing things.

This week overall was mostly just me finding how it is that I wanted to learn and how it was that I was going to learn the information. I did of course learn some things from YouTube videos and some articles that I have been reading. I have found the structure that I have been looking for. Now starting on week 2 I am going to be working on getting things done with these free courses. I think that I am doing pretty good with the lessons. They go way more in debt with things and are beginner-friendly. Even though I am intermediate with my knowledge I have no issues learning more about what I have already learned.
